The City on the Hill

The Place of Your Works

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
Matthew 5:14

Recurrent Thought

The Good Works that You do are a manifestation of the Light within You. Be ready to do good works and bring glory and honor to God.

Christ devoted-followers are raised up with assignments to impact their society. Jesus uses two powerful images to describe the level and intensity of their influence using the images of Salt and Light. He says we the salt of the Earth and the Light of the World.

One prerequisite to be a city on the Hill is that you have to be Light first. Your character and identity should be radically transformed by the power of the Cross of Jesus Christ. There are many other people who bring impact to societies; however, we speak of impact brought by those who are changed inside out, by the power of the Lord Jesus Christ. To become a City that Impacts you must be light.

Last week we looked at the Sustaining influence of the Christ devoted-followers as we examined the metaphor of Salt. Believers are called the Salt of the Earth and have the power of preserving, sustaining and enriching community.

Today, we look at the Metaphor of Light. Once again, in trying to stay true to context, we are told that part of the way we shine as Christ devoted-followers is through our Good Works

In today’s message we handle your Characteristics of you as a City on the Hill

Mat 5:16  In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven

There are three uniqueness about this text

  • In those days, a city was usually set on a hill for protection from who would be invaders. It was set on a hill for all to see. Jesus uses this image that the believers are set on a hill.
  • It is in plural. Therefore, its referring to a cluster of believers a church. That we are together Light and City set on a Hill

Here are four thoughts about the passage

  1. A City on the Hill is always Seen by the Public
    • Your Faith is Never Private, it is always Public
    • As you minister, know that the Faith you have is never Private
    • People see what you do, you are public. You are a city on the hill
    • Therefore, You must be deliberate to be ethical, biblical and trustworthy.
    • You can’t do something different in public and in private. It should be the same thing
    • Therefore, be comfortable with your public faith.
    • Your practical Christianity which is public becomes a powerful attraction of nonbelievers.
  2. A City on the Hill Dispels Darkness
    • The Church is a solution to the darkness in the city, in the family and in the
    • The Bible Says
      • Isa 60:1  "Arise, shine! For your light has come; the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.
      • Isa 60:2  For look! Darkness will cover the earth and thick darkness is over the people, but the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you.
    • As believers we must be conscious to dispel darkness wherever God brings us
    • Darkness and light do not co-exist, Therefore, the believer dispel darkness.
    • You are the Light of the World and dispel darkness wherever you go
    • Everywhere you go, the darkness must be dispelled.
    • You are a light for your generation
  3. A City on a Hill Attracts Broken People
    • A City on the Hill was a place of safety and peace
    • Genuine Christ devoted followers are places where broken people find safety.
    • This is one image is one that does not seek the lost, but the lost seek it.
    • Good and health community of Christians invites the miraculous
    • Collectively we impact the earth for his glory
    • This metaphor emphasises the fact that the wanderer, the one in need is the one that goes to the city for help.
    • When you are a City on the Hill, you bring joy to others.
    • For the people coming to you, they are restored in God, and hope given to them
    • You are a visible reality to whom people come to seek help. People shall come to you to the brightness and lighting. Those arching in the heart want a place for peace for their troubled heart
  4.  A City on a Hill Cannot Be Hidden
    • The Good works that we do, cannot be hidden
    • Good works may not be known by all but cannot be hidden
    • Good Works are always conspicuous never hidden.
    • Therefore, if your works are hidden they could be something you are not able to freely allow others to notice it
    • A City set on the hill that shines brightly cannot be hidden
    • A city is uniquely set. It cannot be hidden
    • As the Light, the assignment is to uncover the Good that the devil hides.
    • Have confidence that your good works will not be hidden, forgotten, crushed or obliterated.
    • Truth is never crushed. It will always rise even when it is trampled upon.

1Ti 5:25  So also good works are conspicuous, and even those that are not cannot remain hidden (ESV)
